Representatives of Yamal will go to Canada to find their power

The Arctic Winter Games will take place in Canada from the 18th to the 24th of March. About 2000 sportspeople from Canada, the USA, Greenland, Finland, Sweden, Norway and Russia will participate in them.
Yamal will be represented by 70 sportspeople from 9 municipalities. The team includes 19 skiers and biathletes from Labytnangi, also 18 sportspeople from Purovskiy district will participate in the ski race and the arctic all-around. Noviy Urengoy delegated 14 skiers and sportspeople playing table tennis and futsal (mini-football). Salekhard will be represented by 10 athletes, who will participate in the arctic all-around, the ski race and figure skating. Nadymskiy district and Noyabrsk sent 3 sportspeople each; they will compete for medals in the ski race and table tennis. Each of Gubkinskiy, Muravlenko and Tazovskiy districts delegated one representative to the team.
As it is noted in the department of international and external economic relations of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, in Canada the delegation of Yamal will be divided in two groups. Snowshoes running, ski biathlon, snowshoes biathlon and futsal will take place in Hay River, and the ski race, the arctic all-around, table tennis and figure skating – in Fort Smith.
The snowy owl Kechi is the mascot of the Games in 2018. Its name is translated from language of the Cree – one of indigenous peoples of the northern Canada – as “power, strength”, what is completely corresponds to the motto of the Arctic Winter Games in 2018 – “Find your power”.
The delegation of Yamal has participated in the Arctic Winter Games since 2004, and since 2006 it is the only region representing Russia.
In July of 2017 under approval of the Ministry for foreign affairs of Russia the preliminary application was submitted to the International committee of the Arctic Winter Games to host the Games on the territory of Yamal in 2024. Now the application is under consideration.
According to the head of the regional department of international and external economic relations Alexander Mazharov, inclusion of Yamal to the list of territories to host the Arctic Winter Games, forming of the united arctic national team of Russia and legitimate membership in the International committee of the Arctic Winter Games as a permanent member – these are prospects and plans of the Autonomous Okrug on development of participation of the Russian Federation in the international competitions.
