The vaccination campaign of 2018 began in Yamal on the 7th of March. The first four teams went from Noviy Urengoy and Tazovskiy towards each other. First the veterinarians are vaccinating animals in the area of Yamburg. Vaccination against anthrax and brucellosis is waiting for reindeer; the veterinarians will also vaccinate dogs, including against rabies. The first trip of the team is being fulfilled by terrestrial transport; it is calculated for ten days. In March the specialists plan to vaccinate about 50 thousand animals against different diseases.
The head of the veterinary center of Noviy Urengoy Sergey Orzhekhovsky is personally involved in the trip. It needs to make sure that everything is going as planned. He would like to thank the local indigenous population: the specialists established interaction with nomads, they are provided with choums for living during the vaccination (a choum is dwelling of reindeer herders, it is a tent covered with reindeer hides: it is similar to a tepee). Of course, the teams are equipped with special fortified tents, but in tundra it is difficult to think over the better home than the choum, as he notes.
Assistance from indigenous population of the Autonomous Okrug became great help for veterinarians last year. As we should remind, 2017 was largely a breakthrough year for the veterinary sector of Yamal. The experience of the Arctic region became indicative for other reindeer-herding northern regions. Colleagues were interested in the mechanism of the most extensive vaccination of animals – the herd in 600 thousand reindeer in Yamal. Students of Omsk state agrarian university also participated in this unique project. In the summer of 2017 the students worked in tundra of Tazovskiy district. Today the educational institution is selecting candidates for the forthcoming vaccination campaign.
Last year the students did a great job, as Sergey Orzhekhovsky notes. He has already visited the university, in early April the sides will sign the agreement on cooperation. The students will go to Tazovskiy district, as it is the biggest territory, employees are necessary. Of course, the students will be only assistants within vaccination teams, but it will become the best experience, as he notes. One of the young men is ready to join rows of Yamal veterinarians in the future.
According to assessments of last year, about 40 thousand animals were vaccinated with help of the students from Omsk University. According to the preliminary data, this year it is planned to send 10 students to Yamal for practical training. They will work in the region during summer.
