The Reindeer Herder’s Day took place in Salekhard on the 24th of March. More than ever it can boast with attendance.
Each holiday of nomads in districts and towns has its own the most interesting thing, as the president of the association of indigenous ethnic minorities of the North “Yamal is for descendants” Edward Yaungad says in the conversation with a correspondent of the news agency “Sever-Press”. Reindeer herders travelling in the western part of Yamal came to Salekhard: Komi-Zyryan, Khanty, Nenets people. They came with children to meet their relatives. Salekhard is the capital of the region, and this is the most picturesque holiday.
The president of the Russian Association of Indigenous Peoples of the North, Siberia and the Far East, a deputy of the State Duma of the Russian Federation Grigory Ledkov marked significance of traditions and the international component of the holiday.
As he said, there were many guests; the sitting of the council of the Association of the World Reindeer Herders was planned, basically, representatives from Scandinavian countries came, and also the delegation of the Republic of Singapore arrived. Singapore is an observer country in the Arctic Council. As he underlines, guests are always the special joy.
As organizers of the sports competitions told, the participants arrived and arrived by reindeer sleighs from everywhere. Everything was without bureaucracy, the organizers did not ask from where a participant was, though even from Singapore, it was enough to tell the name.
The vice-governor of Yamal Irina Sokolova, Edward Yaungad, Grigory Ledkov and the head of the administration of the town Salekhard Ivan Kononenko welcomed the participants and the guests of the holiday. The Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office, Minister of foreign affairs, Minister of manpower of Singapore Mr. Sam Tan informed that his friend Grigory Ledkov had invited him to the holiday. As he said, the aim of his visit was to get acquainted to local culture, cuisine and to see the race of reindeer teams.
As the minister underlines, local indigenous peoples are the most interested side in everything that happens here, as it needs to render direct influence on decisions being taken here. Singapore became an observer in the Arctic Council in order to have the opportunity to share opinions on the future of the Arctic and to introduce own suggestions. As an observer country Singapore supports exchange of opinions on such issues as environmental protection, education and healthcare. This is the reason why the delegation arrived in Salekhard in order to understand better everyday life and culture of indigenous peoples, to understand how it is possible to help and to contribute to development of Yamal.
Mr. Sam Tan invited the delegation of Yamal to Singapore on a return visit and wished to celebrate the holiday cheerfully.
