On the 1st of June it has been 285 years since the day of foundation of the Red Banner Northern Fleet.
This is the only multi-service strategic force in the Russian Armed Forces that protects Russia’s national interests both in the Arctic and in other parts of the World Ocean.
The Northern Fleet Commander Admiral Nikolay Yevmenov told about the main results of forces and troops in the interview with the newspaper “Krasnaya Zvezda” (Red Star). He also notes that submarines are permanently present under the ice of the Arctic.
“For obvious reasons we shall not go into details of this work, but I can say that it is fulfilled on the regular basis, and the Northern Fleet has enormous experience of under-ice navigation and operation of submarines and surface ships in arctic conditions”, the commander said. According to him, the general and main task in the Arctic region is to maintain stability.
“Ensuring of safe fulfillment of maritime policy and normal economic activity of the state in the Arctic regions and areas of the Northern Sea Route is a priority direction of our work. Activity of the Northern Fleet on these areas is absolutely transparent and corresponds to all regulations of the international maritime law and the UN Charter”, as Nikolay Yevmenov said.
In his opinion, from the point of view of modern equipment, the Northern Fleet is not only in step with the times but on some indicators is ahead of it.
“In the interests of ensuring of Russia’s security in the Arctic the state built unique objects on the Arctic archipelagos. At the present time anywhere else in the world there are no such administrative and residential complexes as “Arctic Shamrock” on the archipelago of Franz Josef Land and “Northern Clover” on the New Siberian Islands. Of course, we do not stop here, and work on development of arctic infrastructure is continued on a number of other arctic archipelagos”, as Nikolay Yevmenov said.
