The rector of Tyumen State University Valery Falkov signed the order about creation of the center for arctic initiatives — a new project of Tyumen State University.
It is aimed at ensuring of interaction between the University and regional, national and international organizations busy with exploration, study and development of the Arctic. Also the center will take the course on coordination and improvement of efficiency of educational and scientific activity of the University’s structural subdivisions related to the theme of the Arctic.
Tyumen State University is increasingly involved in arctic projects. National cooperation is being developed – Tyumen State University became a member of the National Arctic Research and Education Consortium created by Russian higher education institutions in northern regions of the country to unite efforts and to improve efficiency and quality of intellectual development of the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation. Within work of the Consortium scientists of Tyumen State University initiated creation of the scientific thematic network “Arctic Law”, became participants in other thematic networks, manage work of students, who take prize places on topics of arctic research.
Tyumen State University cooperates actively with foreign universities of the Arctic, being a member of the University of the Arctic since 2009. Tyumen State University participates in annual scientific congresses, is a participant of several scientific thematic networks, for example, “Philosophy of Law in the Arctic”, and fulfills the Student Mobility Program “North2North”. A representative of Tyumen State University became a member of the international program “Fulbright Arctic Initiative”, which brought together 16 scientists from 8 countries of the Arctic Council, representatives of the state power and of research centers.
In 2017 and 2018 new grants of the Ministry for education and science of the Russian Federation were received to fulfill scientific arctic research – the project on study of development of extreme phenomena in permafrost regions and the project on mechanisms, pathways and patchiness of the Arctic ecosystem responses and adaptation to changing climate (ClimEco), which will be fulfilled in cooperation with higher education institutions of Germany, Romania and Finland.
That is, the newly created center for arctic initiatives has the wide field for work. It will ensure cooperation between structural subdivisions of Tyumen State University, systematize and distribute information about grants, contests and activities related to the theme of the Arctic, represent interests of Tyumen State University in regional, national and foreign organizations developing arctic topics.
Anastasia Levkina, Professor of the Department Chair of Mathematical Methods, Information Technologies and Managerial Systems in Economics, was appointed the head of the center for arctic initiatives. According to the board of strategic communications of Tyumen State University, participation of representatives of the center in the Arctic Congress in Oulu (Finland), organizing of the conference on health and well-being in the Arctic on the basis of Tyumen State University and development of several applications for grants will be the first steps in work of the new center.
