Russia is preparing to assume the Chair of the Arctic Council for the second time

On the 16th of November representatives of indigenous peoples of the North of Russia will come to Moscow to participate in the international introductory course “The Arctic Council and the role of permanent participants”. They will get acquainted with work of the Council, will learn about the role that the Russian Federation assumed by becoming a member of this international organization.
Our state is a member of the Arctic Council, and in 2021 it will assume the chair for two years for the second time. But, in addition to the states, the Arctic Council includes six public organizations of indigenous peoples of the Arctic with the right of permanent participants. The Russian Association of Indigenous Peoples of the North, Siberia and the Far East under the leadership of Grigory Ledkov is the largest of them. The Association decided to hold the international introductory course in Russia. This information is given in the press center of the Association of Indigenous Peoples of the North, Siberia and the Far East.
“We expect that activists of associations and communities of indigenous people of the Russian Arctic will take an active part in preparation and implementation of events planned for the period of Russia’s chairmanship in the Arctic Council”, as the head of the office of international relations at the Association Antonina Gorbunova said. “The course is purposed to show leaders of the Russian indigenous peoples that a lot depends on them in the Russian sector of the Arctic, to demonstrate opportunities of the Arctic Council, to prepare for productive communication and joint work with foreign organizations”.
The international introductory course “The Arctic Council and the role of permanent participants” is organized by the Association in partnership with the Arctic Council Indigenous Peoples Secretariat and the University of the Arctic Institute for Circumpolar Reindeer Husbandry of the International Centre for Reindeer Husbandry in Norway.
“In the Parliament of Russia indigenous peoples are presented very well, despite their small number”, as the expert on sustainable development of northern regions Elena Baldesku said. – “This fact, as many foreign observers emphasize, speaks very well about national policy of the state and interethnic relations within the country”.
On the first day of the course it is planned to participate in the parliamentary hearings “On legislative protection of the original environment and traditional way of life of indigenous peoples of the North, Siberia and the Far East of the Russian Federation”. The hearings are held by the State Duma of the Russian Federation, the participants of the course are invited as experts.
The international seminar “Indigenous peoples of the Arctic Council” with participation of senior officials of the Arctic Council and representatives of the Arctic Council countries will take place on the second day of the course. The Ministry of foreign affairs and the Public chamber of the Russian Federation are invited as partners and co-organizers of the seminar.
The third day will be dedicated to training and informing of the participants. The representatives of indigenous peoples of the Russian Federation will be able to get acquainted with structure of the Arctic Council, history of its creation and its activity.
Regional leaders of indigenous peoples of the Russian Federation, representatives of the Council of elders and the business council of the Association, youth activists of regional movements will be the participants of the course.
