The center for development of reindeer husbandry will be opened in Yamal

The sitting of the board of the Association of World Reindeer Herders will take place in Salekhard on the 26th of November. Representatives of reindeer-herding regions of Russia, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Mongolia will participate in it. Opening of the center for development of reindeer husbandry is the main issue of the event. This information was given to the news agency “Sever-Press” in the department of international and external economic relations of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug.
The sitting of the board of the association will be dedicated to chartered tasks of the international organization being busy with development of professional, commercial and cultural relations between reindeer-herding peoples of the world. Information on traditional reindeer husbandry will be presented to the participants. The results of work of the association for 2018 will be summed up, and the plan of work for 2019 will be established within the program of the sitting.
The Association of World Reindeer Herders is the international public organization for reindeer-herding peoples, which represents indigenous peoples of the Arctic. It includes reindeer herders and works for wellbeing of reindeer-herding communities. The association has 27-year history of transboundary cooperation between indigenous peoples of the Arctic.
Conducting of activities of the association on the territory of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug as one of the most active participants of international processes of globalization assists to strengthening of cooperation in the sphere of reindeer husbandry, which is the basis of life activity of indigenous ethnic minorities residing in circumpolar regions.
As we should remind, this March the sitting of the board of the association took place in the capital of Yamal — Salekhard. Representatives of 15 Russian regions and also reindeer herders from Norway, Sweden, Finland and Scotland became its participants. Sergey Kharyuchi was elected the president of the Association of World Reindeer Herders in 2017 at the 6th World Reindeer Herders Congress in the town Jokkmokk.
The World Reindeer Herders Congress is the supreme body of the international organization. It is held once per four years and unites representatives of reindeer-herding peoples from all circumpolar countries.
The interesting fact: the first World Reindeer Herders Congress took place in 1997 in Yamal in the town Nadym. The congress was organized and financed by the Russian government together with the regional authorities of Yamal. Representatives of reindeer husbandry of Northern Europe and Russia were among the participants. Exactly the congress led to creation of the Association of World Reindeer Herders, what provided reindeer herders with the platform for cooperation. It assisted to bringing of the topic of reindeer husbandry to the international agenda. Already in 1999 the Norwegian minister of foreign affairs Mr. Knut Vollebæk took the initiative to add reindeer husbandry to the agenda of international cooperation in the Arctic, as a result, in 2000 the Association of World Reindeer Herders received the observer status in the Arctic Council.
