The center for development of reindeer husbandry in Salekhard will unite reindeer herders of the world

The working meeting of the deputy governor of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, the director of the department of international and external economic relations of the Autonomous Okrug Alexander Mazharov with the delegates of the Association of the World Reindeer Herders took place on the 27th of November. The delegation of the international organization, which included the chairman of the board of the Association Mikhail Pogodayev, the Secretary General of the Association Anders Oskal and a member of the board Alyona Gerasimova, was headed by the president of the Association Sergey Kharyuchi.
Within the meeting the sides discussed forming of the national center for development of reindeer husbandry, as the department of international and external economic relations reports.
Alexander Mazharov noted that the center for development of reindeer husbandry in Yamal would assist to interregional and international cooperation between reindeer herders of the Autonomous Okrug and other circumpolar regions being busy with reindeer husbandry.
The president of the Association of the World Reindeer Herders Sergey Kharyuchi said that in the future the center for development of reindeer husbandry would become the base for storage, development and exchange of information between reindeer herders, executive and municipal authorities and scientific communities. In this way, the center will be able to contribute to the better understanding of significance of the world’s reindeer husbandry and reindeer-herding peoples, their traditional knowledge, problems and development.
According to Sergey Kharyuchi, the following global tasks will be set for the center for development of reindeer husbandry: such as preservation and development of sustainable reindeer husbandry in Yamal, strengthening of cooperation between reindeer herders, preservation and demonstration of traditional knowledge of reindeer herders and exchange of knowledge about reindeer husbandry with the public.
Special attention within the meeting was paid to the results of the trip of the president of the Association to Finland to the Arctic Council, where Sergey Kharyuchi had participated in sittings of the Arctic Council working group on sustainable development and the Committee of Senior Arctic Officials.
The meeting of the working group on sustainable development, one of the key groups of the Arctic Council, was attended by about 78 participants, including representatives of seven countries — observers in the Arctic Council, and nine representatives from organizations — observers, three representatives of the working groups of the Arctic Council and two invited experts from the Arctic Economic Council.
The participants of the sitting of Senior Arctic Officials touched upon issues of the strategic plan, structure and organization of the Arctic Council and also listened to reports on projects from the working groups of the Arctic Council, permanent participants and observers.
Sergey Kharyuchi told the deputy governor that during his stay in Finland the delegation of the Association of the World Reindeer Herders had visited the University of Lapland by the invitation of the rector of the University — Mr. Mauri Ylä-Kotola. During the meeting the sides exchanged views on opportunities of establishing of cooperation with secondary special educational institutions of Yamal and the University of Lapland in the format of student exchange.
As we should remind, the Arctic Council is the leading intergovernmental forum, work of which is aimed at support of cooperation between governments, indigenous communities and residents of arctic regions. At the moment, it includes Canada, the Kingdom of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Russia, Sweden and the United States of America.
