A unique case in the world history. Projects of Yamal were presented at the international forum

In Yamal full-scale development did not disturb original lifestyle of indigenous northerners. This information was given by a deputy governor of Yamal, the director of the regional department of international and external economic relations Alexander Mazharov at the plenary session “The Arctic today: the key role of the regions”. He spoke on the report about regional experience of fulfillment of ecological projects in Yamal. The plenary session became the central event at the VIII International forum “The Arctic: Present and Future”.
“The number of population in Yamal makes 540 thousand people. About 48 thousand of them are representatives of indigenous peoples of the North – Nenets, Khanty, Selkoup peoples, at that, 19 thousand of tundra dwellers conduct nomadic way of life. During the latest 8 years the number of indigenous peoples, who conduct traditional lifestyle, grew on 30%! This is a unique case in the world history”, he presented the data of statistics.
Alexander Mazharov marks stable support of traditional lifestyle of indigenous peoples of Yamal from the side of the regional authorities, what assists to considerable strengthening of the region’s positions in the Arctic. According to the regional department of international and external economic relations, Yamal is an active participant of international organizations, which are busy with issues on improvement of life quality for population in northern regions. Socially significant projects on support of sustainable development of indigenous peoples on the example of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug are considered on sessions of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues every year.
In addition, the deputy head of the region presented successful examples of cooperation between the power, science and business. The fish-farming plant on the Sob River is one of them. It is a central link in the regional program on restoration of population of precious fish species. The plant was built due to the joint financing from the government of Yamal and the company “NOVATEK”. This is the first enterprise in the region, which outputs products within compensation activities of fuel and energy complex. More than 60 million fingerlings of whitefish species have been released to water objects of the region since 2016. At that, it is planned to release about 140 million fingerlings of whitefish species every year, when the plant reaches the full project capacity.
Also the deputy governor told about work of the region on restoration of tundra nature, including unique ecological system of arctic islands.
The long-term ecological expedition to Beliy Island in the Kara Sea is a strategic project in this sphere. Volunteers from 18 regions of Russia and 7 foreign countries were involved into the activity. They collected more than 1200 tonnes of scrap metal.
According to him, the region continues the ecological mission on a new territory – Vilkitsky Island. It is planned to work in Kharasaveyskoye field, where it needs to clear tens hectares of arctic land and to remove 20 thousand tonnes of wastes. As Alexander Mazharov notes, global thinking, pointed local work and a systemic approach are the basic principles for fulfillment of ecological projects in Yamal.
As we should remind, the business program of the international forum gathered more than 2 thousand delegates from the whole Russia. Geography of foreign representation covers 24 countries, including all countries of the Arctic Council. The program of the forum included about 40 activities, including the specialized exhibition. Traditionally Yamal is participating in activities of the international level for development of contacts with representatives of business community, for setting of business relations with potential investors and correct positioning of the region.
