On the 10th of December the International Circumpolar Mass Media Congress “Arctic Media World” was opened in Salekhard.
Earlier the journalists and experts visited the settlement Sabetta on the shore of the Kara Sea, where Russia’s largest arctic projects are being implemented. The plant for production of liquefied natural gas arouses increased interest of the foreign journalists, because it is not only unique production, but also a vivid example of successful economic and high-tech cooperation between Russia and foreign partners in the Arctic. In the settlement for workers the guests saw the main places of interest — the international seaport, the arctic air harbor and the LNG-plant. Then the participants of the congress went to the capital of the region, where they passed the ceremony on crossing of the Polar Circle and received diplomas of “polar explorers”, got acquainted with the town and visited the Obdorsk fair.
The program of the media congress consists of three plenary sessions devoted to ecology, preservation of traditions of indigenous peoples of the North and socioeconomic development of the Arctic. Among spokespeople there is the governor of Yamal Dmitry Artyukhov, the secretary of the Union of journalists in Finland Juha Rekola, deputies of the State Duma of the Russian Federation Vladimir Pushkaryov and Grigory Ledkov, the chairman of Barents Press Sweden Tim Andersson, scientists and politicians, academician Alexander Kamnev, the ambassador-at-large for international cooperation in the Arctic at the Ministry of foreign affairs of the Russian Federation Vladimir Barbin and others.
The program includes the briefing with the official representative of the Russian ministry of foreign affairs Maria Zakharova.
Also the program of the congress includes the ceremony on awarding of the winners of the Arctic media contest “We Live in the North”. According to the information given to the news agency “Sever-Press” in the Union of journalists in Yamal, publications, TV and radio spots for the contest were provided by journalists and creative teams from all arctic regions of the country, as well as Sweden, Canada, Norway and Finland. The works were evaluated by the international jury, including the Secretary of the Union of journalists of Russia Vladimir Kasyutin, the Secretary of the Union of journalists in Finland Juha Rekola, the editorial director of the portal Rambler.ru Victor Saxon, the chairman of Barents Press Sweden Tim Andersson, a TV presenter Anton Privolnov. They will be the headliners of the third day of the Arctic forum. On the 11th of December the jury will conduct master classes for the congress participants.
“The main goal of the Congress is to provide open dialogue between journalists from different countries on covering the issues of the Arctic exploration and development. The mission of the event is even wider. Today we have registered more than 50 participants from foreign countries. First of all, these are representatives of the circumpolar region, observer countries of the Arctic Council and, of course, our compatriots-correspondents of Russian-speaking editions abroad. Inviting journalists of foreign mass media, we demonstrate our openness and readiness to talk, what, of course, will positively influence on the image of our country”, the deputy director of the department of international and external economic relations of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug Yevgeniya Baryshnikova explained.
As we should add, so far nothing like “Arctic Media World” has been conducted in Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug earlier. The Congress was initiated by the Union of journalists in Yamal and is supported by the Union of journalists of Russia, the Ministry of foreign affairs and the government of Yamal. More than 200 representatives of media communities, scientists, politicians, experts from all arctic territories of Russia and 24 circumpolar and other countries became the participants in the event.
