Already in 2024 NOVATEK plans to use the eastern direction of the Northern Sea Route during the whole year round and in this regard considers development of icebreaking fleet in Russia extremely important. It was stated by the head of the company Leonid Mikhelson at the conference in Sabetta on issues of development of the Arctic, which was held by Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.
Timely input to operation of the icebreaking fleet is of key importance for development of LNG-projects. It needs to provide year-round navigation on the Northern Sea Route both in western and eastern directions. The government adopted the program on commissioning of three icebreakers LK-60 in 2017, 2019 and 2020, but in fact today the program is broken, and the delay of the first is more than two years, as Mikhelson said.
According to him, from 2019 to 2025 it is necessary to provide commissioning of 5 nuclear-powered icebreakers, as the agency “Prime” informs. With consideration of exploitation of the existing nuclear-powered icebreaking fleet it will allow providing the opportunity of year-round exploitation of the Northern Sea Route from the Gulf of Ob to the Bering Strait. At that, NOVATEK together with Rosatom decided to construct other 4 icebreakers on LNG with the capacity 40 megawatt for icebreaking support of ships in the Gulf of Ob and water areas of the Kara Sea.
“And we are going to input them into operation not later than 2023, in order in 2024 we would be able to go to the east during the whole year round and completely would cover the western direction with these 4 icebreakers”, as Mikhelson added.
He asked for support from Dmitry Medvedev in this issue.
