Sovcomflot group of companies placed an order for construction of three tankers — product carriers of the new generation at the Zvezda shipbuilding complex in Primorsky Krai. They will use environmentally friendly natural gas motor fuel (LNG) as the main fuel. The sides signed the relevant agreement at the end of last year.
The deadweight of the vessels will be 51 thousand tonnes (standard size MR). The tankers are intended for transportation of oil products and gas condensate and will be chartered to NOVATEK on the basis of long-term time charter contracts. Ice class 1B will allow ships to fulfill transportations safely on areas with difficult ice conditions. Delivery of the tankers is planned for 2022-2023, as the press-service of “Sovcomflot” informs. Use of LNG in comparison with traditional fuels allows reducing significantly the amount of emissions into the atmosphere: sulfur oxides and low-dispersed particles – by 100%, nitrogen oxides — by 76%, carbon dioxide — by 27%.
Sovcomflot is the first shipping company in the world, which actively introduces LNG as the main fuel for large-capacity oil tankers. Last year the company took into operation three tankers of Aframax standard size operating on gas motor fuel. In addition, in September of 2018 Sovcomflot placed an order for construction of two more Aframax-sized oil tankers on LNG at the Zvezda shipbuilding complex.
