The brand “Made in Arctic” develops the project on purchase and transportation of reindeer hides from arctic populated areas. Now the talks is about the opportunity to purchase hides in Nenets Autonomous Okrug, Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug and Taymyr, as transport schemes are connected to processing centers for leather production, which are located in the southern Urals, as the information center of the Russian Association of Indigenous Peoples of the North, Siberia and the Far East informs.
“At the present time negotiations are being conducted with a row of enterprises in Bashkiria, we attract specialists from Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug to the work”, as the head of the office “Made in Arctic” Denis Lashin said. – “The talk is about integration of reindeer hides into now developing production chains on processing of cattle hides for leather productions. A reindeer hide is applicable not only in fur production, but also in leather business. Reindeer skin is used to make suede leather, which has well-established reputation on foreign markets. Reindeer skin, as a material for suede leather, is out of competition”.
Denis Lashin says that this applies mainly to calfskin, but skin of later age groups also is used to make suede leather, and, in addition, it can be successfully processed with tanning agents being used in leather business. Reindeer hair obtained as a by-product from tanning of reindeer hides is a very valuable product with secure sales both for export and on the domestic market. Reindeer hair is the best material for stuffing mattresses, car seats and lifebuoys. For the latter purpose it is widely used in the fleet, because it has the incomparably greater load capacity than cork material. Recently it has turned out that reindeer hair, the molt, in fact, not the entire coat but undercoat of a deer — soft fine hair is the material in many respects superior to Merino wool for textile industry.
As we should remind, in Yamal the meat-processing complex “Payuta” is busy with delivery of reindeer hides to the Finnish company “Lapin Nahka Oy”. Last year more than 5 thousand hides were prepared for the Finnish company. After special processing each product received an individual marking, a European stamp and was sent to the partners. In Finland these hides are used to sew handbags, leather covers, and also raw materials from Yamal are used to create decorations.
