The governor of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug Dmitry Artyukhov paid an official visit to the capital of Finland — Helsinki. Together with members of the delegation of Yamal the head of the region participated in the working meeting with the Deputy Minister of Economic Affairs and Employment Petri Peltonen.
“We are open for cooperation. I am sure that mutually beneficial relations between Yamal and Finland will develop. At once several directions are of great interest for our region. They include increase in external trade turnover between enterprises in the region and Finland. Of course, the social sphere deserves special attention. Topics related to construction of kindergartens, schools, sports and medical centers in northern conditions, as well as exchange of successful tourist practices are particularly important today”, the governor of Yamal said during the bilateral meeting.
In addition, Dmitry Artyukhov focused on socioeconomic success of the region and told about implementation of the project “Yamal LNG” and construction of the new plant on production of liquefied natural gas on the Gydan peninsula. The foreign colleagues note that Yamal and Finland have many similar features. This fact will contribute to solving problems that are important for the both northern territories.
Specifically for the representatives of Yamal the employees of the Ministry of employment and economy of Finland will prepare the list of potential partners being interested in products and services of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug. The document should help to establish and strengthen bilateral economic ties. Issues of cooperation were also discussed during the meeting of Dmitry Artyukhov with the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Russia to Finland Pavel Kuznetsov.
As it should be noted, during the working visit the sides signed the external economic contract between the meat-processing complex “Payuta” (Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, Russia) and “Lapin Nahka Oy” (the province of Lapland, Finland). This Finnish enterprise is busy with processing and making products of reindeer hides. The production itself is fulfilled manually with use of traditional methods, going through dozens of different stages under strict quality control at each stage. Within the contract in 2019 the enterprise “Payuta” will deliver 5800 reindeer hides to Finland. Also, delivery of reindeer meat was discussed with one of private companies located in Helsinki. The preliminary negotiations received positive assessment from both sides.
The visit to the office of “AkerArctic” became an important part of the stay of the delegation of Yamal in Finland. The firm specializes in developing, designing, engineering, consulting and testing services for ice vessels, icebreakers, marine structures, marine transport solutions and ports. The company also participated in development of large arctic LNG tankers for the project “Yamal LNG”. Among important elaborations there are innovations used in “Baltika”: it is the world’s first icebreaker with an asymmetric hull, what allows it to break ice when moving forward with its bow and stern first and also sidewise. The ship successfully proved itself in the Gulf of Ob on the territory of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug. During the excursion around the enterprise, the representatives of Yamal listened to information about the company’s current projects and modern elaborations applicable for the Far North.
According to the press service of the governor of Yamal, the delegation also visited one of Finnish primary schools. 700 people — children from 7 to 15 years old study here. The educational institution uses the so-called personality-oriented education. The schoolchildren study not school subjects but topics or concepts in general. For example, important historical events and biographies of famous people (instead of separate subjects: geography, history and literature). According to teachers, this approach allows the pupils to remember bigger amount of necessary information and directly influence on choice of a future profession. Moreover, the children’s results are not evaluated till the sixth grade. There are no exams in primary school.
Friendly relations between Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug and Finland have existed for several years. In 2014 the administration of the capital of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug — Salekhard and the authorities of the center of Lapland – Rovaniemi signed the Memorandum of understanding. The document aimed at development of relations in the sphere of management, economy, social sphere, education, science and culture works today. Official visits of representatives of Yamal and Finland became traditional. In 2019 the sides will also conduct a row of joint specialized events.
