In 2019, which was announced the International Year of Indigenous Languages by the United Nations Organization, the Russian Association of Indigenous Peoples of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug “Yamal is for descendants” plans to publish the phrasebook in languages of indigenous ethnic minorities of the North. This information was given by the president of the association Edward Yaungad. According to him, the edition will contain phrases being used more often in everyday life: “What is your name”, “I am hungry, I want to eat”, “Where to go” and further. It will contain words in Nenets, Khanty, Selkoup, Komi, Russian and English languages. The layout of the phrasebook has been already designed. The work will be continued in order to go from a little booklet to a complete phrasebook. It will help to communicate with indigenous people in any district of Yamal.
In addition, the association conducts activities on preservation of native languages through the contest “The hero of our time”, which takes place once in two years. This year it will be also announced. Within the contest young people write about a heroic person or event in their native languages. Winners are awarded with monetary prizes. In addition to native languages of Nenets, Khanty and Selkoup peoples the contest was replenished with the language of Komi-Zyryan people, who lead traditional way of life being busy with reindeer husbandry and fishery the same as ethnic minorities of the North do.
According to explanations of Edward Yaungad, basic work on support and development of traditional lifestyle is conducted in branches of the association. In districts the problem of preservation of native languages is not acute. It appears when tundra dwellers move to permanent place of residence to the urban environment. And here the association comes to help by creating conditions in order native languages would not be lost. For example, the ethnic and cultural autonomy of Khanty people “Pulngavat” in Salekhard founded by the association conducts courses on study of native languages.
