Oil workers of the company “RN-Purneftegaz” together with the trade union organization held the holiday of Nenets culture and the local history quiz for schoolchildren. The project “Northern friendship” was timed to coincide with the international year of indigenous languages announced by the UN in 2019.
In town Gubkinskiy pupils of the seventh-ninth forms of secondary school №4 answered 20 questions on local history. The results of the quiz identified the best experts in culture of forest Nenets people, who have their own dialect different from tundra Nenets people. In parallel, the contest on knowledge of the native language was held among pupils of the boarding school in the ethnic village of Kharampur, Purovskiy district. Children of Nenets people, who lead nomadic lifestyle connected with traditional economic activity – reindeer husbandry and fishery, study there. At the same time, teachers checked their knowledge of the native language together with schoolchildren, as the press service of “RN-Purneftegaz” reports.
The winners of the quiz and the Olympiad were awarded with valuable prizes — music stereo systems. A study visit to the ethnic village of Kharampur, where they met with their coevals, became the main gift for the schoolchildren from Gubkinskiy, who had scored the biggest number of points at the end of the quiz. An interactive lesson of Nenets language was held at the boarding school. The guests have been surprised with the fact that pupils are not called to the blackboard by surname, as all the pupils have only two family surnames — Pyak and Aivasedo. Also the town-dwellers participated in the competitions on ethnic sports: jumping over narty – nomadic sleighs, mas-wrestling and throwing of a tynzyan on a khorey (the note: a tynzyan is a rope-lasso for catching a reindeer, and a khorey is a long pole for driving a reindeer sleigh). The winners were awarded with the cup “Northern friendship”. On the ceremony of summing up the results in the ethnic choum (a dwelling for northern nomads; it is similar to a tepee) the participants of the festival were treated to traditional Nenets dishes — “shurpa” of venison and berry bread — “ngodya nyan”.
It should be noted that support of culture and traditional lifestyle of indigenous people in Yamal is one of priorities of social policy in the company “RN – Purneftegaz”. Over the years of work in the region the company fulfilled many social and charitable programs aimed at development of ethnic communities and associations in Purovsky, Nadymskiy and Krasnoselkoup districts. Among the projects there is revival of the ethnic village of Kharampur, which was founded in the 20-ies of the last century as a trading post. Owing to help of the company, Kharampur became the cultural center of forest Nenets people, whose population makes about 2 thousand people. Since 2002 the oil workers have built a club, a library, 20 cottages stylized as a traditional dwelling – a choum, also a boarding school, where children of reindeer herders and fishermen learn their native language and traditional crafts.
