Scientists of Ural State Mining University (Yekaterinburg) are preparing the collection “Geological monuments of Yamal” with photographs of nature of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug. It is planned to present the book in 2019.
“Now I am preparing the book “Geological monuments of Yamal”. Nothing is left among many natural monuments because of human activity, and in order the destiny of some of them would not happen again, we decided to publish this book. The material has already been collected; more than 100 thousand photos were taken during the expeditions. The book will be released already this year”, — said the director of the Stone Center at Ural State Mining University Firat Nurmukhametov.
In order to prepare the collection six expeditions by all-terrain vehicles were organized from the south of Yamal to the Kara Sea. The researchers went around the Ural Mountains on the territory of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug. According to Firat Nurmukhametov, there are only two official natural monuments in Yamal now, but the number of unique natural places is bigger, for example, Lake Shchuchye, which is not inferior to Lake Baikal. According to the geologist, it is necessary officially to register all natural monuments, as TASS reports.
“In 2014 during one of our expeditions we slightly moved the border between Europe and Asia. According to the description we had, two lakes flowing in different directions should have been there — the watershed should have been there. When we arrived in the place, we understood that the previously established memorial point did not correspond to the border”, — the director of the center added.
After introduction of the new coordinates into the system, the point of the border moved by about 800 meters, as Firat Nurmukhametov explains. The participants of the expedition proposed to install the new memorial sign on the new place of the border: the plate with two mirror images of nomadic sleighs – narty.
