Rights of indigenous peoples for fishery are being protected in Moscow

The extended sitting of the working group on perfection of legislation regulating fishery for provision of traditional lifestyle and fulfillment of traditional economic activity of indigenous ethnic minorities of the North, Siberia and the Far East of the Russian Federation took place in the Committee of the State Duma of the Russian Federation on affairs of nationalities under the chairmanship of Grigory Ledkov.
“Traditional fishery plays an important role for existence of the entire row of northern, Siberian and Far Eastern ethnic groups. Exactly fishery as a trade helps to preserve traditional knowledge of indigenous peoples and native languages of nomads and fishermen”, as Grigory Ledkov declared.
The deputy head of the Federal agency for fishery Pyotr Savchuk notes that the agency supports the necessity of urgent measures on change of both federal laws and many normative acts regulating fishery on places of traditional activity of indigenous peoples.
“Solving the issue of rights of indigenous ethnic minorities for fishery was started at the federal level”, as a participant of the sitting, the head of the legal service at the Russian Association of Indigenous Peoples of the North, Siberia and the Far East Antonina Gorbunova told. – “Majority of amendments, separate suggestions and systemic changes are offered separately by each of departments being represented in the working group. A row of regions has ready decisions on organizing of full-fledged fishery for indigenous peoples. Only support at the federal level is required. I hope that, having gathered all the interested sides together in the working group, we shall receive new effective amendments to legislation. Rights of indigenous peoples in the group are successfully presented by its chairman – Grigory Ledkov.
