Specialists will inspect the route of the railroad line connecting the north-east of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug and Norilsk industrial region. The expert group will include representatives of the Russian geographical society, the Russian center for exploration of the Arctic, Russian University of transport, the Military Topographic Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, the expedition center of the Russian Defense Ministry and the Siberian expedition center. The non-profit partnership “The Russian center for exploration of the Arctic” is the coordinator and a participant of the project from Yamal.
In March the first stage of the expedition “Transpolar Mainline” will be held to inspect and evaluate the route. The main stage – conducting of field operations — is scheduled for September. Transpolar mainline is regarded as a possible continuation of the Northern Latitudinal Railway, which will go from the station Obskaya to the station Korotchayevo. The prospects for development of fields of hydrocarbon raw materials and solid minerals in the region and in the north of Krasnoyarsk Krai are associated, including, with development of railroad lines in this direction. In addition, extension of the transport route will provide the opportunity to make terrestrial approaches to the ports of Dudinka and Igarka on the Northern Sea Route and to create railroad communication with Norilsk. This will allow developing areas with raw materials in the Far North the whole year round.
“Extension of the Northern Latitudinal Railway to the east will provide additional opportunities for development of remote areas of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug. In the future, the entire belt of settlements in the region will be included in the unified transport system of the country. Support for this expedition means investments in lives of future generations of northerners”, said the deputy governor of Yamal, the director of the department of external relations Alexander Mazharov.
During the expedition the specialists will define characteristic points, bottlenecks and places of possible passages across natural obstacles and will put them on the electronic map. They will also assess landscape changes and soil parameters along the route, will conduct preliminary topographic studies of two railroad corridors — the southern and the northern in the direction “Korotchayevo — Igarka — Norilsk”. According to the press service of the head of Yamal, on the basis of the obtained data they will assess technical potential and economic feasibility of building of the complex of routes or choosing of one of them.
As it should be noted, development of arctic territories is one of priorities of the state policy of the Russian Federation. Large-scale projects of global significance are being implemented in Yamal: the plant “Yamal LNG” at the end of 2018 reached the planned capacity, Bovanenkovo field reached its design capacity, construction of the plant “Arctic LNG 2” is planned, and start of development of Kharasaveyskoye field is announced.
