In 2018 the amount of cargo transportations on the Northern Sea Route 1.84 times increased in comparison to the previous year. Thus, at the end of last year the amount of cargos made 19 million 688 thousand tonnes, in 2017 this figure was equal to 10 million 700 thousand tonnes.
In particular, transportations of liquefied natural gas on the Northern Sea Route 37.7 times increased — up to 8 million 390 thousand tonnes, the amount of transportation of oil and oil products — by 15.6%, up to 7 million 800 thousand tonnes, as it is reported on the website of the Ministry of transport of the Russian Federation. In addition, transportation of gas condensate 7.5 times increased — up to 805 thousand 400 tonnes, ore — by 29.9%, up to 43 thousand tonnes. At the same time, transportation of general cargos and coal decreased.
Last year the administration of the Northern Sea Route issued 792 permissions for navigation in its waters, including 91 – for passage of ships under a foreign flag.
In the waters of the Northern Sea Route there are six seaports — Pevek, Dikson, Tiksi, Khatanga, Sabetta and Dudinka. Also 17 equipped and unequipped points on the coast of the mainland and islands carry out cargo operations on the water area. The way along the North Sea Route from South-East Asia to Europe allows significantly reducing time of cargo transportation in comparison with traditional routes through Suez or Panama canals. It is expected that further the growth of the main amount of cargoes will be associated with transportation of liquefied natural gas, oil, coal and metals.
