Scientists are looking for the optimal model of organizing of reindeer husbandry in the North

Scientists from Tyumen State University, the Arctic University of Norway and the Norwegian University of Life Sciences studied interaction of reindeer population and their natural food supply in Lapland.
The joint study is based on the data of field observations provided by the Norwegian ecologists and economists. It is aimed at solving of a socioeconomic problem of sustainable development of the ecosystem “reindeer population — vegetation biomass” on the example of the northernmost province of Norway — Finnmark.
The scientists offer a new model in the sphere of population dynamics, as is informed in the department of strategic communications at Tyumen State University. According to the postdoctoral research fellow of the Institute of Environmental and Agricultural Biology (X-BIO) at Tyumen State University, PhD in applied mathematics Yevgeniy Burlakov, its advantages, in particular, include consideration of such real factors as seasonal changes in food supply of deer. Moreover, it is connected not only with the change of seasons, but also with the seasonal migration of deer. In addition, the effects of degradation of this food supply are taken into account, as well as more realistic, in comparison with known similar approaches, modeling of the effect of deer husbandry by the Sami people. It should be noted that the Sami people also live on the Russian territory of Lapland.
“On the basis of the received data it is possible to develop recommendations on organizing of reindeer husbandry in Lapland aimed, on the one hand, at receiving of economic benefits and maintaining of the living standards of indigenous peoples of the North and, on the other hand, at preserving of the ecosystem of “deer — food supply” in stable state with consideration of changes in food supply”, said Yevgeniy Burlakov, who participated in the study from Tyumen State University.
To increase the realism of modeling and opportunities of its applied use the scientists plan to complicate their mathematical model. It will also help to consider tasks of optimal management of the relevant ecosystem directly related to issues of sustainable socioeconomic development. The used approaches of mathematical modeling allow applying them for scientifically grounded solving of problems of sustainable development of northern regions in Russia. Thus, within the interregional scientific and educational center the specialists of Tyumen State University in the sphere of mathematical biology plan to pay special attention to real problems facing Yamal. Work on their solving will be conducted together with colleagues from the scientific center for study of the Arctic and foreign research centers.
