The specialists plan to forecast appearing of new gas emission funnels in Yamal, as they are dangerous for indigenous people — reindeer herders migrating around the area and for constructions.
“Territories with a large number of wells drilled both at exploration, search for deposits and directly for construction, likely, “bleed” gas pressure, form zones of increased permeability with access to the surface and, thus, reduce risks of uncontrolled avalanche methane release”, doctor of geological and mineralogical sciences, an employee of Tyumen State University Marina Leibman says.
The scientists have already made the map that forecasts danger of forming of “mounds” on the basis of a space image of medium resolution. But it shows only large areas, on which there is high risk of their appearing by the combination of factors. Among the factors there are: shallow occurrence of underground formation ice and considerable concentration of methane in upper horizons of rocks, as the press service of Tyumen State University informs.
However, search for “gas mounds”, in other words, of those positive landforms that were formed on the surface and grew during short time — several decades, is still the main method to search for specific dangerous areas. As Marina Leibman explains, the dynamics of mounds-predecessors of the known gas emission funnels was traced on the basis of materials of space images. It turns out that for 40-43 years of this period the mounds about 2 times increased by area — from about 20 to 40 meters. The specialists plan to supplement morphometric indication features of the mound-predecessors with their spectral characteristics. In addition, their task includes morphometric analysis of digital models of landforms to search for objects similar to these mounds and also adjustment of existing methods of landscape mapping to analyze risk of appearing of cryogenic processes and mapping the depth of occurrence of underground ice.
