Indigenous people of the Arctic will help scientists to build new architecture of network observations over extreme weather conditions. This issue was discussed in Nadym at the seminar “Wellbeing of human in the Arctic in conditions of the changing climate” with participation of the Nobel laureate Terrence Vincent Callaghan, Russian scientists and medical employees, representatives of oil and gas companies and indigenous peoples of the North leading traditional lifestyle. The participants of the meeting discussed opportunities to attract residents of Yamal to collection of data on extreme weather conditions and natural phenomena influencing on health of population and economic activity. The aim of the project is to create the new network of weather and climate observations with participation of residents of Yamal.
The initiative of the project belongs to the scientific center for study of the Arctic. The scientists of Yamal accumulated positive experience of cooperation with indigenous population. There are volunteer assistants from among reindeer herders leading traditional lifestyle and helping the researchers with collection of objective data on ecological situation in the region, medical and socio-psychological problems of tundra-dwellers. According to the deputy director of the scientific center for study of the Arctic, doctor of medical sciences Andrey Lobanov, many of the volunteer assistants are ready to become participants in the new project.
“The seminar was attended by representatives of Tazovskiy, Nadymskiy, Yamalskiy, Purovsky and Krasnoselkoup districts”, Andrey Lobanov commented. – “The methodology of their participation in the project is easy. They will take pictures of extreme weather and natural phenomena on smart phones, will describe how the event influences on health and everyday life of reindeer herders and will transmit data to our center for further data processing. For this aim the scientists developed and proposed the system of information formalization. Terrence Vincent Callaghan was invited as an expert. The international network of ecological changes in Siberia – SecNet, which is represented by the Nobel laureate, works closely with indigenous inhabitants of Siberian regions, owing to that the scientists receive much useful and new information about what is happening in nature and with climate of Western Siberia”.
The director of the research Institute of ecology and rational use of natural resources at Tyumen State University Andrey Soromotin informed the participants about influence of climate change on the Arctic ecosystems and large-scale research in this direction. He proposed algorithms for studying of microclimate in different arctic landscapes. Associate professor of Saint-Petersburg State University, senior researcher at Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute Nadezhda Kharlampyeva spoke about academic programs of Roshydromet.
The seminar was also attended by representatives of subsidiaries of Gazprom. Being socially-oriented, the enterprises are interested in preservation of health and longevity of employees working in the arctic region. The scientists discussed issues of cooperation with Vladimir Kuznetsov, the adviser to the chairman of the Gazprom Trade Union organization.
