In the second quarter of this year it is planned to start loading nuclear fuel on the icebreaker Arktika being built in Saint Petersburg. This information was given to TASS by the director general of the central design bureau “Iceberg” Alexander Ryzhkov.
“The icebreaker of the project 22220 “Arktika” is in the active phase of construction, loading of fuel is the priority task to be solved in the second quarter of 2019. We developed the entire documentation under this procedure”, he said.
According to the director general, soon after loading of fuel it will be possible to start the physical launch of the vessel’s reactor and complex mooring tests, which will take approximately 2.5 or 3 months.
After completion of construction “Arktika” should become the most powerful icebreaker in the world. It will provide year-round navigation in the western sector of the Arctic. Other two icebreakers of this project — “Sibir” and “Ural” — are being built at Baltic Plant in St. Petersburg.
