Russia is ready to provide support to all ships passing along the Northern Sea Route. This was stated by the minister of foreign affairs of Russia Sergey Lavrov.
At the International Arctic forum, speaking about navigation within the Northern Sea Route, Sergey Lavrov notes that under the international law the coastal state has significant rights to regulate navigation on territorial waters and the exclusive economic zone.
“In particular, special rights are also provided for ice-covered areas within the exclusive economic zone. On waters of the Northern Sea Route there is a rule, corresponding rules of navigation, which are approved by the Ministry of transport of the Russian Federation, the Russian government. For many years all states that use the Northern Sea Route, and last year it was used by ships of more than 20 states, observe these rules”, Lavrov said.
He underlines that the rules are the same for both foreign and Russian ships, as RIA “Novosti” reports.
“Pilotage and ice support of these vessels is envisaged, and most importantly, we take responsibility for ensuring of security, for ensuring of the most careful attitude to the very fragile ecosystem of this region”, the minister said.
He adds that Russia is ready to provide support to all vessels that pass along the Northern Sea Route.
“We are developing the port infrastructure, navigation and geographical potential of this transport artery and, of course, the opportunity of search and rescue”, the minister explained.
He compared the rules of navigation on the Northern Sea Route with traffic rules on a motor-road, they are not imposed, but they must be observed for own safety.
“Thus, I hope that we shall continue cooperation on use of the Northern Sea Route, providing the best combination of economic feasibility, ecological safety and, of course, regulation that is now applied, it has proved its effectiveness, there are no complaints about how these rules are implemented in practice, we heard from no-one”, Lavrov said in the conclusion.
