The Arctic: history and modernity. Potential of the Polar Regions was discussed in St. Petersburg

The IV international scientific conference “The Arctic: history and modernity” was held in St. Petersburg. The participants discussed forming of the international interdisciplinary platform to discuss and solve the wide range of issues related to the Arctic region and to create objective understanding of the Russian Arctic policy.
Scientists note that in the XXI century the Arctic region plays an exceptional role in geopolitics. The richest natural resources (including energy), development of technologies that allow using these resources, growing significance of northern sea communications and other factors have intensified the desire of leading states to take the strong position in the Arctic.
At the same time, the colossal potential of the Polar Regions arouses interest not only in Arctic states, but also those, the borders of which lie at the considerable distance from it. Therefore, researches on study of the continental shelf and clarification of its maritime boundaries, analysis of problems associated with human economic activity in the new conditions are of particular importance. The emphasis is placed on negative consequences of this activity for ecology, solution of tasks of defense, prevention and liquidation of technogenic disasters, and also development of human capital and preservation of historical and cultural heritage of the Arctic.
The conference touched upon the wide range of issues related to problems and prospects of sustainable socioeconomic development of the Arctic. Among the key topics of the event there were: the Northern Sea Route, robotics in the Arctic, military security and strategic stability in the Arctic zone. Problems of ecological and technogenic security, historical and cultural heritage of the Arctic, tourism and prospects for its development in the Arctic, development of human capital in the Arctic and the problem of energy supply of the Arctic were touched upon.
“The forum became traditional on the platform of Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University. It is regularly attended by leading foreign and Russian experts, including employees of the Institute of Europe of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The conference program is extensive and relevant. Undoubtedly, it will be the worthy continuation of the fifth international arctic forum “Arctic — Territory of Dialogue” and will contribute to education of highly qualified engineering personnel for the Russian North at the University”, said the head of the representational office of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug in St. Petersburg Alexander Palagin.
An employee of the Yamal representational office Karina Uramayeva spoke on the report “Arctic Volunteers. Liquidation of consequences of the Arctic development” within the section “Problems of environmental, technogenic and military security in the Arctic region”.
It is important that at the conference young people can get acquainted with the main issues of the arctic agenda, both students and young scientists can express themselves, share new ideas, find opportunities to apply their knowledge and skills in the strategically important region of the country.
The second part of the conference will be held in Murmansk from the 23rd to the 25th of April at Murmansk State Technical University.
