The traditional Reindeer Herder’s Day took place in the settlement Gyda, Tazovskiy district. As usually, nomads, residents of the settlement and guests from all nearby territories gathered to the holiday. However, exactly in Gyda the Reindeer Herder’s Day differs with one unusual competition. Here sportspeople play football “in a malitsa and a yagushka” in addition to the race of reindeer sleighs, throwing of a tynzyan on a khorey, mas-wrestling, which are included to the program of all competitions of reindeer herders in Yamal. (The note: a malitsa is a man’s fur coat and a yagushka is a woman’s fur coat, both are made of reindeer hides).
The participants are competing in earnest. In spite of the intricate ethnic outfit, the players, including women, quickly run on the snowy field and challenge for every ball.
It is known that for participation it is necessary to be dressed completely in the ethnic costume — a malitsa or a yagushka with a belt and other components. The only relaxation of the rules — it is possible to use sport shoes instead of traditional foot wear.
(The note: a tynzyan is a rope lasso for catching a reindeer; a khorey is a long pole for driving a reindeer sleigh).
