The 18th session of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues is being continued in New York. The opening of the exhibition “I draw legends” by a representative of Uilta people residing in the Far East, Veronika Osipova, took place. Being inspired with art-works by the artist, a member of the UN Permanent Forum Mr. Gervais Nzoa (Cameroon) warmly remembered his travel to Yamal.
Members of the Permanent Forum on indigenous issues visited Yamal in 2015. In addition to the official meetings, the cultural program included introduction to life and traditions of indigenous peoples of the North in Yamal, to original features of their way of life, culture and languages.
Gervais Nzoa says that he really liked Yamal and would love to visit it again.
Within the events of the 18th session of the Permanent Forum Gervais Nzoa will attend the event of the Russian delegation “Preservation and popularization of the language heritage of indigenous ethnic minorities of the North”, which will be held under the leadership of the head of the Federal Agency for affairs of nationalities Igor Barinov.
The event in New York is presenting regional practices on support of language diversity in Russia; the participants are discussing ways and mechanisms to solve problems in the sphere of language policy.
It should be noted that in Yamal almost 60% of indigenous population fluently speak languages of Nenets, Khanty, Selkoup peoples. Mother tongues are taught in schools. Native languages of northern peoples are taught in 8 of 13 municipalities of the region, on territories belonging to locations of traditional residence of northern ethnic groups. Schools in the region are provided with special teaching aids in native languages of ethnic minorities for children from the 1st to the 7th grades. Their developing and testing was fulfilled by teachers of Yamal together with leading linguists of Russia from the Institute of the Peoples of the North under the Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia (St. Petersburg). At the present time development of textbooks on study of native languages of northern ethnic groups for senior pupils – the 8th-9th grades – is started.
The task to preserve and develop languages of indigenous peoples of the North in Yamal is solved comprehensively. The model of ethno-cultural education of children is introduced. Preservation of folklore and all kinds of folk art of northern peoples is ensured. Samples of folklore are carefully collected and stored. The expert council in the sphere of indigenous folklore conducts this work. Grants and awards are given by the decision of the council.
Books are published in languages of Nenets, Khanty and Selkoup peoples in the region. This year it is planned to publish the collection “Folklore of Seyakha Nenets people”, the collection of fairy-tales and stories by Antonina Syazi “The woman-storyteller and the son of the town’s head” in Russian and Khanty languages.
