Yamal launched the application campaign on enrolment of volunteers to participate in the ecological expedition to Vilkitsky Island. It was announced on the 7th of May by the Chairman of the interregional public organization “Green Arctic” Yevgeniy Rozhkovskiy during the briefing in the government of the region.
He notes that teams of volunteers have been formed for many years: since 2012 – to Beliy Island, since 2017 – to Vilkitsky Island. The team includes volunteers not only from Russia, but also from near and far foreign countries.
“This year we are planning an expedition in one shift. It will last thirty days — from the 10th of July to the 10th of August. Last year there were two shifts in 15 days each. The team will include 30 people – experienced volunteers, environmental scientists and rescuers. The number of participants is determined with conditions of transportation, severe arctic conditions and issues of security, which is on the first place for us”, explained Yevgeniy Rozhkovskiy.
The application campaign is held on the website of “Green Arctic”. It consists of two blocks. The first is a test, which consists of 33 questions. Accordingly, having scored the most points, a person goes to the second stage — training camps. Traditionally, they are held in the Polar Urals. Volunteers will be tested for endurance and stress resistance.
“The main task of the training camp is to prepare the team for comfortable stay and fruitful work”, he underlined.
This year the ecological expedition will move towards the military unit. Manual work will be carried out as well as operations with help of heavy machinery. This year equipment will delivered from Beliy Island to Vilkitsky Island.
“At the present time the soil on Vilkitsky Island allows moving and manually collecting metal, and there are no special problems”, said Yevgeniy Rozhkovskiy.
According to the deputy head of the region, the director of the department of external relations of Yamal Alexander Mazharov, the work on cleaning of the island from accumulated ecological damage is complex and supposes not only cleaning, but also activity of scientists.
“This year scientists will be included to the ecological expedition. For us it is important how quickly nature will recover, and what is needed to make this process faster. This is serious scientific work that is necessary for the future. For example, now changes are seen on Beliy Island – grass, which we brought there, is growing, and life appeared in 5 years in those places, where we cleaned”, said Alexander Mazharov.
Vilkitsky Island is an uninhabited island located in the east of the Kara Sea, between the Gulf of Ob and the Yenisei Bay. Meteorological observations at the station of Vilkitsky Island were started in March of 1954. The station is named after a Russian hydrographer, a surveyor and an arctic explorer Boris Vilkitsky. In 1955 the polar station was merged with the Dikson hydro-base. In 2011 the station was transferred to an automatic meteorological station. In fact, observations at the station were fulfilled till the 30th of September, 2011. The equipment and collective of the station left it in November of 2011.
As it should be reminded, ecological activities on Vilkitsky Island were launched in 2017. The volunteer team that includes experienced volunteers, who had showed good results in the previous expeditions to Beliy Island, was sent here. They were engaged in survey and assessment of state of ecology on the arctic island. Then the volunteers started cleaning the area of the weather station. Wooden pallets for storage of casks and garbage were built. In addition to ecological cleaning, the team had prepared the place for stay of next expeditions, conducted aero-photography, inventory of hazardous wastes and objects of the former infrastructure, research of soil and vegetation, radio-ecological and hydro-ecological studies.
