On the 9th of May, the Victory Day, residents of Yamal participated in the All-Russian social and patriotic action — the volunteer procession “The Immortal regiment”. Traditionally, citizens in all towns and districts of the region joined to the procession. Residents of Yamal marched in a column along streets of municipalities with photos of their relatives — veterans of the army and the navy, home front workers, prisoners of concentration camps, residents of the blockaded Leningrad, children of the war. According to the organizers, the number of participants grows every year.
In Salekhard the procession traditionally was started on the square of the culture and sports complex, where people of Salekhard of all ages came in advance. In their hands they carried red carnations and portraits of fathers, grandfathers, great-grandfathers, who had defended the Motherland in the years of the Great Patriotic War.
The governor of Yamal Dmitry Artyukhov also participated in the procession. Within “The Immortal regiment” he went with a portrait of his grandmother’s brother Ivan Maksimov (1924-1944) and his grandmother’s uncle Mikhail Yerokhin, guards major general (21.11.1898 — 27.09.1959).
“My grandparents were born in the 30-s and were adolescents, when the war began and ended. But my grandmother’s older brother Ivan Maksimov participated in the war. He almost lived up to the Victory Day — just five months and died on the 28th of December, 1944 near Budapest. He was guards junior sergeant of the third Ukrainian Front. Every family has a war page. For me, as for everyone, “The Immortal Regiment” is an action that united the whole country and the world. We found the connection, when everyone can valiantly carry a portrait of their relative after so many years — it is the connection of times and the tribute to those people, who gave their lives so that today we can participate in such holiday”, said the head of the region.
On this holiday even after 74 years after it is hard to hold back tears, reminiscing about the heroic deeds of the heroes of the war. Barely holding back tears, a resident of Salekhard Tatiana Savinykh is remembering her uncle — a participant in the Great Patriotic War, Fyodor Prikhodkin (1923 — 1979), who had been taken to the battlefront.
“He was called to the front from Kurgan Oblast. He went through the whole war, was in Poland. He returned with military awards”, she told a correspondent of the news agency “Sever-Press”.
Valentina Krasnova participated in “The Immortal Regiment” with a portrait of a relative Ivan Toporov (23.02.1914 — 1975). In the war he served as a driver of the first battery, was guards yefreytor.
“From the extract of the archive materials it is known that he was brave and cold-blooded, perfectly knowing work of a driver. He was called to the war, and he was at the battlefront at Stalingrad and reached Berlin. During offensive battles he always timely pointed a gun on the battery position, contributing to fulfillment of combat tasks. He was skilful in his military profession. He had not any accidents and breakdowns on the way. In battles, thanks to courage and skills, he provided shooting down nine enemy aircrafts by weapon and received the medal “For courage”, the woman told.
Nelya Shapovalova went in “The Immortal Regiment” with a portrait of her grandmother Anna Goncharenko, mother’s mother, who was born in Ukraine on the 7th of March, 1919.
“From there in 1942 she was taken to the Auschwitz concentration camp. There she was together with grandfather about a year and returned home”, the woman remembers.
The All-Russian action “The Immortal Regiment” was completed in the Victory Park, where it was changed with the public patriotic action “The People’s Victory”, participants of which read poems, military memoirs and letters of the war years. It was organized by the Centralized library system of Salekhard.
According to the data of the 1st of May given in agencies for social protection of population, 442 veterans of the Great Patriotic War and categories equated to them live in Yamal. Among them there are participants and disabled war veterans of the Great Patriotic War (15 people), former minor prisoners of fascism (44 people), persons awarded with the badge “To the Resident of Blockaded Leningrad” (18 people). In addition, there are 318 home front workers, 47 widows of deceased participants of the Great Patriotic War – the women, who did not enter into a new marriage.
As we should remind, the movement “The Immortal Regiment” was initiated in Tomsk by journalists Sergey Lapenkov, Sergey Kolotovkin and Igor Dmitriyev. There, in Tomsk, the people’s movement was called “The Immortal Regiment”, and the Charter of the Regiment was created. It sets out the principles of the movement as a non-profit, non-political, non-governmental civic initiative. Earlier similar actions under other names took place in other cities of the country. Such events were held in 2004 — 2006 in Kuzbass and in 2007 — in Tyumen. Since 2015 the action has officially become all-Russian. On the 9th of May of 2015 the action “The Immortal Regiment” for the first time took place on the Red Square after the Military Parade dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the Victory. More than 150 thousand people expressed their intention to participate in the procession. According to police, more than 500 thousand people participated in it. They were headed by the President of Russia Vladimir Putin, who carried a portrait of his father, who had been a soldier in the war.
