The solemn launch to water of the second serial nuclear-powered icebreaker “Ural” of the project 22220 will take place at the Baltic Shipyard on the 25th of May. Unlike “Arktika”, the main vessel of the project, the icebreaker “Ural” will descend from the slipway with already loaded reactor plants and practically fully equipped electric propulsion system.
To improve the production process it was decided to increase the launching weight of the nuclear-powered icebreaker “Ural” up to 19 thousand tonnes. In addition, experts fulfilled loading of the first three tiers of the superstructure. This information was given in the press-service of the Baltic Shipyard. Such technological solutions allow simplifying work of shipbuilders, reducing costs and time of construction.
The key features of the nuclear-powered icebreaker “Ural” of the project 22220 are: the length -173.3 meters, the width — 34 meters, the icebreaking capability — 2.8 meters, the assigned service life — 40 years. The deadline for delivery to the customer — the state corporation “Rosatom” is scheduled for 2022.
The nuclear-powered icebreakers of the project 22220 “Arktika”, “Sibir” and “Ural” will be the largest and the most powerful nuclear-powered icebreakers in the world. They will be able to provide icebreaking support for caravans of ships in the Arctic conditions, breaking ice up to three meters thick on the course of movement. The new icebreakers will provide icebreaking support of ships carrying hydrocarbon raw materials from extractive fields of the Yamal and Gydan peninsulas, the shelf of the Kara Sea to markets of countries of the Asia-Pacific region. The dual-draft design of the vessel will allow using it both in arctic waters and in mouths of polar rivers.
