The expedition “The Mystery of Mangazeya” will go along the ancient portage, on which the domestic pioneers of the XVII century reached the Yenisei River, having opened Eastern Siberia. The expedition will set off from the settlement Krasnoselkoup on the 23rd of May.
According to historical researches, inhabitants of the ancient Mangazeya as well as famous Yerofey Khabarov, who added vast territories of the Amur River region to Russia, used this route at moving from the watershed of the Taz River to the watershed of the Yenisei River. The modern travelers plan to check if chronicles and orders really speak exactly about the portage situated in the source of the Pokalky River – on the border of modern Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug and Krasnoyarsk Krai.
The travel is officially registered by the regional branch of the Russian geographical society in Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug. This information was given to the news agency “Sever-Press” in the press-service of the governor of Yamal. 6 people from Noviy Urengoy, Moscow and Bakhchisarai will go to the expedition. They dedicated it to the 35th anniversary of “Gazprom dobycha Yamburg”, the company that rendered the biggest assistance to organizing of the expedition. Within it the travelers plan to overcome more than 500 kilometers by motor rubber boats, to reach the portage, to make photo- and video-registration of possible artifacts confirming its historical use in order to pass them to scientists. After that they plan to go on the whole route of inhabitants of ancient Mangazeya and to complete their travel in the settlement Turukhansk, Krasnoyarsk Krai.
As we should note, they conducted the reconnaissance stage of the expedition in summer of 2018: the travelers went from Mangazeya to the mouth of the Pokalky River, in the source of which there is the Yenisei Volok (portage), from where the route to New Mangazeya lies (the settlement Staroturukhansk, Krasnoyarsk Krai).
