The Polar Explorer’s Day is celebrated in Russia on the 21st of May. Its celebration has been started since 2013. The date was set by the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation “On the Polar Explorer’s Day” in recognition of merits of people in this profession. The total number of citizens in Russia, who can be referred to polar explorers, includes about 2 million people, as calend.ru informs.
The date for this holiday was chosen in a non-random manner. The first scientific research expedition of the polar drifting station “North Pole – 1” started its work on this day in 1937.
The decision on organizing of such scientific station in the Arctic was taken by the soviet leadership in February of 1936. Otto Schmidt was appointed the head of the expedition, and Ivan Papanin – the head of the polar station “North Pole -1”. Also the expedition included an oceanographer Pyotr Shirshov, a geophysicist-meteorologist Yevgeniy Fyodorov, a radioman Ernst Krenkel. The tasks, which were set for “North Pole -1”, included conducting of oceanographic, meteorological and geophysical researches in interest of exploration of the Far North, including development of the Northern Sea Route.
During work of the expedition the researchers collected scientific materials unique for that time, which for the first time allowed receiving authentic data on nature of the North Pole and processes taking place on the given territory. “North Pole – 1” became the world’s first scientific and research drifting station, opened the new epoch in exploration of the Arctic, and results of its work were included to the golden fund of the world science.
The Polar Explorer’s Day appeared in the calendar of holidays in Russia on the initiative of the special envoy of the President of the Russian Federation on international cooperation in the Arctic and Antarctic Artur Chilingarov. And in December of 2012 the given suggestion was supported by the Federation Council. On the 25th of April of 2013 in the course of the Direct Line the given issue was suggested for consideration to President Vladimir Putin. He supported the idea to arrange the professional holiday of polar explorers, researchers of Arctic and Antarctic and suggested starting its celebration already in the same year.
Traditionally official events for specialists working in conditions of the Far North take place on this day: meetings, roundtables, seminars, conferences, on which employees of different branches share information and experience. Heads of enterprises and representatives of local authorities officially congratulate polar explorers, and award them with honorary diplomas and prizes.
