In summer of 2019 archeologists of Yamal will continue researching the ancient burial place in Yamal, where imitation of the burial had been found. It is supposed that this is not the only grave, but the necropolis, where about 26 graves can be situated. This information was given on the 5th of June by a researcher of the sector of archeology in the scientific center for study of the Arctic Alexander Gusev at the press-conference in the news agency “Sever-Press”.
The archeologists plan to research the ancient burial place Nyurymposllor situated between Salekhard and the settlement Zelyoniy Yar in June-July. In 2017 the archeologists received the information about grave hollows and items in them, the review confirmed the words of the witness. Excavations were started last year; the opened graves shocked the archeologists. Items that were used by human in life were placed in the grave: an axe – near feet, a caldron – near head, a knife – near waist and even a fragment of a trap, but there was no human body. According to the archeologist, the monument is referred to the beginning – the middle of the 19th century, what is confirmed with the found belt buckle with the image of a hussar with a sword inherent in the period of a Napoleonic battle. Supposedly, the cenotaph (imitation of a grave) belonged to a grownup man-hunter.
“Last year within the preliminary review we registered 26 grave hollows, including grownup’s, children’s, double and even three-in-one graves. A cenotaph was found. It is interesting to learn if it is the only case or not”, said Alexander Gusev.
According to him, if all graves occur to be empty then Nyurymposllor can be called the first grave cenotaph in Yamal. In other case, if the specialists manage to find burials, then they will be able to conduct anthropological and genetic analysis of mummies. The expedition group includes anthropologists from Yekaterinburg, Tyumen, participation of colleagues from South Korea is expected.
