6 exhibition projects of regions of Ural Federal Okrug were opened within the first Ural cultural forum in the Museum and Exhibition Center “Poklevsky-Kozell House” in Yekaterinburg. Yamal presented the exhibition “40 thousand summers and winters. The long sleep of the baby mammoth Lyuba”.
The baby mammoth itself, being installed in a special showcase, is the central exhibit. But this is only a part of the project. According to the information given by Tatyana Koptseva, the director of the regional Museum and Exhibition complex of Shemanovskiy, to a correspondent of the news agency “Sever-Press”, of course, the paleontological discovery itself is unique and is of great interest. But this time the artistic frame was made for Lyuba for the first time — the exhibition was supplemented with works by an artist Sergey Baranov and by modern craftspeople of bone-carving art of Yamal associated with images of mammoths. In addition, in the hall of the Yamal exposition there is a tusk and wool of these extinct animals, a film about the baby mammoth is shown on the screen.
Lyuba is famous all over the world; it has already visited Korea, England, Australia, Canada, Japan, America. But in Russia Yekaterinburg became the third city after Moscow and Novosibirsk (not counting Salekhard), residents of which received the unique opportunity to see the find with their own eyes. As it should be reminded, the body of the baby mammoth was found in 2007 in tundra by a reindeer herder Yuri Khudi. The age of the animal makes no more than three months, in the permafrost it was left lying during about 42 thousand years and the degree of preservation is unique. The baby mammoth received the name in honor of wife of the reindeer herder, who had found it.
Residents and guests of Yekaterinburg expressed high interest in the unusual exhibit, a lot of visitors came to the official opening of the exhibition projects, and almost every one of them visited the exhibition of Yamal and took a photo of the baby mammoth. And this is only the beginning of the exhibition; it is possible to see Lyuba in Yekaterinburg till the 14th of July.
According to the head of the office for artistic project management and design of the regional Museum and Exhibition complex of Shemanovskiy, the artist Sergey Baranov, he created all the paintings being presented here specifically for this project within a few months. In particular, 6 of them are painted on canvas in oils in classical technique, 9 — with help of mixed techniques.
“The canvases show the northern nature, which had not changed much since the time of mammoths. These are white nights, Northern Lights, tundra in winter and summer. Other works are made on mirror plastic in the authorial multilayer technique – there is applique work, engraving and acrylic drawing. These paintings are dedicated to different myths of northern peoples associated with the image of the mammoth”, said Sergey Baranov.
According to him, the paintings and works by bone carvers from Yamal are a kind of the frame to the baby mammoth, they make the exhibition complete.
At the opening ceremony of the exhibition projects the director of the department of culture of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug Yevgeniy Koltunov thanked the organizers for the warm welcome and wished the first Cultural forum of Ural Federal Okrug to develop and continue.
“First of all, it is a platform for communication, acquaintance, and I hope very much that it is for further cooperation. Today, many of our colleagues — directors of museums, libraries and other cultural institutions — communicate, exchange and tell what they have. Therefore, I would like to see these ties develop further”, Yevgeniy Koltunov said.
According to him, in Yekaterinburg Yamal presented the very important find, but this is only a small part of what the region can show.
“Such mutually beneficial cooperation, exchange of collections, expositions, exhibitions, of course, could please not only us, but also our population, people, who need to see it”, said the director of the department of culture of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug.
