Young and active social activists of “Green Arctic” started the final activities on restoration of the abandoned weather station on the mountain range Rai-Iz. Fulfillment of the project “Height 868” was started in 2016 for creation of necessary infrastructure in order to increase the demand for mountain routes in the Polar Urals.
During the four-year history of the project the volunteers of “Green Arctic” cleaned the area adjoining to the station, carried out repairs, equipped two rooms with beds and a dining room, formed reserves of drinking water and fuel. Now “the shelter for tourists” can take groups of travelers up to 15 people. The volunteers plan to create an exhibition, where guests can learn about history of the weather station and work of meteorologists.
The activists of “Green Arctic” are sure that now their project will start new life – “the shelter for tourists” will become a popular tourist offer and an integral part of trekking and hiking routes of the Polar Urals. As it is reported in the social network “VKontakte” on the public page “The department of external relations of Yamal”, the tour operator “Yasavey” is developing the package tour, in which “the shelter at the height 868” will be presented as one of the iconic tourist destinations of Yamal.
Today “Green Arctic” unites about 200 volunteers from 21 regions of Russia and 9 foreign countries. The TV project about travels of the NTV channel was filmed with assistance of representatives of “Green Arctic” in 2017. Thanks to it, Yamal entered the guidebook in alternative tourism and presented its tourist potential on the nationwide scale. Climbing of the NTV crew on the mountain range Rai-Iz and winter fishing on the Poluy River was organized to create the story about the tourist routes and the project “Height 868”. The film “Height 868” by Pavel Khandorin, the film director of the First Arctic TV channel (the note: the TV channel Yamal-Region) about the project on arrangement of the weather station on the mountain range Rai-Iz received the first prize on the 20th International Festival of Mountain and Adventure Films “Vertical”.
