The department on affairs of indigenous ethnic minorities of the North in Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug summed up the intermediate results of the re-registration of population leading the traditional way of life. The census of Yamal tundra-dwellers has been conducted since May of 2019 on behalf of the governor of the region Dmitry Artyukhov.
In total, more than 6 thousand people or about 2 thousand families from among the representatives of indigenous ethnic groups of Yamal were re-registered till the 1st of September. Work of sociologists is being already completed in Yamalskiy district; Shuryshkarskiy and Nadymskiy districts are the next in the queue. The census of all 5 thousand families leading the traditional way of life in the region should be completed this year.
During trips to nomadic camps and fishing areas the specialists of the department collect data on the number and composition of families of tundra-dwellers. According to the press service of the governor of Yamal, the information is entered into the unified information system (UIS) “Yamal”, which is used by the government of the region to provide measures on support for residents of Yamal, who lead the traditional way of life.
“The census of tundra population of Yamal is necessary in order to make the procedure on providing them with state support more targeted”, said the vice-governor of Yamal Irina Sokolova. “We are constantly working to expand potential of the UIS “Yamal”, creating a really effective tool of digital economy on the basis of the platform. Detailed data of the census will allow us to improve quality of management in terms of providing tundra-dwellers with support”.
The UIS “Yamal” already contains information on the total number of nomads and reindeer herds in farms, employment by sectors of economy and data on social protection on providing with housing and other measures of support. The department on affairs of indigenous ethnic minorities of the North is the operator of the information system.
As it should be reminded, measures under development on support for tundra-dwellers are being discussed in the region. Heads of relevant departments of the region participate in meetings with reindeer herders and fishermen of Yamal. This autumn suggestions of tundra-dwellers will form the basis of “the road map” being under development.
