One the 8th of September the town Salekhard – the capital of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug is marking its 424th anniversary since the day of foundation. On this occasion the age was corrected on the pedestal of the mammoth Mitya that welcomes visitors to the town near the river crossing “Salekhard – Labytnangi”.
Salekhard was founded as a Cossack fortress in 1595. During long time it was the northernmost outpost of the Russian state. Salekhard went through many transformations, but always remained the administrative center.
In 1635 it was renamed Obdorsk Outpost, and in the late 18th century it was abolished, while the outpost was transformed into the village of Obdorsk, the center of Obdorsk Volost of Beryozovsky County of Tobolsk Province. During the Soviet era Obdorsk became the capital of the newly formed Yamal-Nenets national district, and in 1933 received the new name — Salekhard. It was transformed into the town on the 20th of June of 1938.
