A group of scientists — ecologists, ornithologists, soil scientists and scientists studying bears visited Vilkitsky Island within the ecological expedition for estimating the probability of recognition of the island as a special protected natural area. During the expedition they managed to find about 30 different species of birds, some of which are protected. Charadriiformes (wading birds) and Anseriformes (geese) actively use Vilkitsky Island for nesting, resting during migration and shedding feathers.
On the southern shore the scientists discovered the output of ancient peat, at taking samples of which they found wood chips and hard elytra of beetles. It will allow clarifying the age of the island and establishing how the climate changed on it.
The scientists studying bears also conducted their research. They managed to put a satellite collar on a female polar bear and to conduct a survey: to define the size of the body, age and weight of the animal, to take samples of blood and fur for further study. As it is informed at the Industrial University of Tyumen, all these facts may become the reason to include the island in special protected natural areas.
