The joint sitting of the delegation of the German-Russian parliamentary group of the German Bundestag and deputies of the Legislative Assembly of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug was held in Salekhard. It was also attended by representatives of the executive authorities of the region and heads of oil and gas companies.
The deputies of Yamal acquainted the guests with the regional legislation in the sphere of social policy, specifics of legislative regulation of life of indigenous peoples of the North and measures being taken to preserve ecology at intensive development of industrial potential and increase in energy production in the Autonomous Okrug.
“There is interest in Yamal as the economic and energy center. The high assessment of its raw material base assists to that. Yamal is the largest supplier of hydrocarbon raw materials not only to the domestic but also to the foreign market. More than twenty major industrial projects are being implemented here; the Sabetta seaport and the plant of liquefied natural gas “Yamal LNG” operate. We tried to satisfy the interest of one of the main partners in Europe on gas exports and to show the work of oil and gas companies delivering gas to the “Nord Stream” pipe”, said Sergey Yamkin, the chairman of the Legislative Assembly of Yamal.
The Federal Republic of Germany is the main Russian partner in development of European gas exports. The projects of Gazprom “Nord Stream” and “Nord Stream-2” begin on the Yamal Peninsula. It determined the special interest of the delegation to the work of oil and gas companies and their interaction with the local authorities. However, the representatives of Yamal found something else to surprise the German guests – reindeer husbandry and fishing, development of which is possible only in compliance with environmental legislation. The European colleagues marked the unprecedented measures being taken by the Autonomous Okrug and extracting companies for environmental protection. They would like to apply some of them at home.
Dr. Robby Schlund, the chairman of the German — Russian parliamentary group likes that laws being issued in the region relate not only to oil and gas, but also to protection of indigenous peoples of the North. The guests felt the warmth of Yamal today. He would like to say that the Russians and the Germans are closer to each other than distant.
According to the information given to the news agency “Sever-Press” in the press service of the regional parliament, the sides traditionally exchanged symbolic gifts. The work of the delegation in Yamal will help to strengthen inter-parliamentary ties and to form good-neighborly relations.
