The seminar on ethics of research with indigenous people of the Arctic and development of the best practices of co-production of scientific and traditional knowledge of indigenous peoples of the Arctic was opened on the 3rd of October in Rovaniemi (province of Lapland, Finland). Young reindeer herders — private owners from Priuralskiy district of Yamal Sergey Kondygin and Yanna Kondygina are participating in it, as the department of external relations of Yamal informs.
The seminar is dedicated to preservation of traditional economic activity in conditions of state regulation. The practical part of the seminar includes a visit to the territory of Sami people, acquaintance with their history and innovations, study of experience of using fenced reindeer husbandry in the north of Finland. The reindeer herders from Yamal will be able to use the received knowledge in practice and spread it in their communities to preserve the traditional way of life in conditions of changing climate and industrial development.
Professors Florian Stammler and Bruce C. Forbes, who devoted their scientific activity to study and preservation of the traditional lifestyle of peoples of the Arctic, are the organizers of the seminar. During many years the scientists conducted research in Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug. Together with colleagues from the scientific center for study of the Arctic they participated in joint grants. Cooperation with Yamal helped them to make the general picture of life of indigenous peoples of the North, to study the best practices of preservation of native environment and traditional lifestyle.
