Siberia observes climate change. Yamal will share its experience

Scientists from Yamal are participating in the IV international seminar of SecNet. “Siberia in the global context. Interactions and feedbacks of arctic and southern territories of Siberia in conditions of the rapidly changing climate: environment and local communities” is the theme of the seminar. Its work is built around global challenges that are the drivers of development of Siberia. The scientists are discussing local ecological problems of the region, quality of life and wellbeing of social communities in conditions of the rapidly changing climate, sustainable social and ecological development of Siberian territories, as the scientific center for study of the Arctic informs.
The director of the scientific center for study of the Arctic, candidate of geological and geographical sciences Anton Sinitskiy will tell about organizing of scientific research on climate change in Yamal. He will acquaint the scientific community with specifics and problems of conducting such studies in the arctic region, experience of interaction with fuel and energy enterprises, Roshydromet and other scientific organizations. He will present the long-term scientific works of the center for study of the Arctic on monitoring of transformation of cryolithozone and glaciers of the Polar Urals. A senior researcher of the sector of ecological and biological research, candidate of biological sciences Alexander Krasnenko will tell about integrated ecological monitoring in Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug.
The seminar is being conducted by Tomsk State University together with the consortium INTERACT, the University of the Arctic, the Regional committee of environmental protection and nature management (Tomsk), Institute for Water and Ecological Problems, SB RAS (Barnaul), Yugra State University (Khanty-Mansiysk), Institute of Monitoring of Climatic and Ecological Systems, SB RAS (Tomsk) with support from the Russian Foundation for Basic Research.
The scientific center for study of the Arctic is represented in Russian and international network projects INTERACT, the University of the Arctic, Siberian Environmental Change Network — SecNet. In 2017 the second working seminar of the international network SecNet was held in Salekhard, where issues of climate change and extreme weather events were discussed. In 2018 the regional capital hosted the III working conference of SecNet.
The network SecNet is an open community created on the basis of Tomsk State University that unites educational institutions, research organizations and scientific groups being interested in assistance to sustainable development of northern and polar regions through accumulation of comprehensive experience and knowledge about human and environment of Siberia.
