Within the meeting of representatives of arctic states and regions in Iceland the governor of Yamal Dmitry Artyukhov invited residents of the host country of the forum to the Arctic Winter Games in 2026. According to him, for the first time in history of the games Yamal intends to hold the competitions on its territory. He explains that children and sports are the bridges that should be built to unite peoples of the Arctic.
As it should be reminded, the delegation of the international committee for the Arctic Winter Games worked in the capital of Yamal. The guests were satisfied with the level of development of sports infrastructure, in particular, in Salekhard and Labytnangi, noting that the objects under construction — for example, “Yamal Arena” – would make the branch even stronger and more worthy.
The Arctic Winter Games have been held since 1970. Sportspeople from Yamal have participated in them since 1992, as an independent team — since 2004. The region won 587 medals; almost half of this number is golden. Many famous sportspeople began their careers from the Arctic Games: Albina Akhatova, Luisa Noskova, Kristina Ilchenko, Larisa Kuklina, Yulia Makarova and others.
60 states and more than two thousand delegates, including ones from arctic regions of Russia, are participating in the annual Arctic Circle Assembly. 180 different discussions are being conducted within the forum. Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug has been participated in this event for the third time.
