Within the meeting of representatives of arctic states and regions in Iceland the governor of Yamal Dmitry Artyukhov told the world northern community about the unique phenomenon — the rarest gyrfalcons, which chose objects of Yamal infrastructure as a place to build their nests.
In 2018 scientists surveyed 45 bridges in the northern part of the route. In total six nests of the gyrfalcons were found at the site. Thus, cautious assumptions about the uniqueness of this part of the Northern Latitudinal Railway were confirmed. In comparison with the results of previous years population of the gyrfalcons, which build their nests on the bridges, is not only preserved, but even increases. The gyrfalcons find here favorable conditions for building nests and stable food base.
The researchers managed to install cameras on several nests.
Nest building of the gyrfalcons, the largest falcons in the world, which are listed in all possible Red books in the entire circumpolar range, was first registered at the existing infrastructural objects exactly on the bridge passages of the route “Obskaya-Bovanenkovo” in 2014.
