In November the new icebreaker “Ob” will start working in Sabetta

The act on transfer of the port icebreaker “Ob” was signed at Vyborg Shipyard in Leningrad region. Signatures under the document were put by the director general of the FSUE “Atomflot” Mustafa Kashka and the director general of JSC “Vyborg Shipyard” Alexander Solovyov.
“The diesel-electric icebreaker “Ob” is the flagship of Portoflot project”, Mustafa Kashka said. – “Today it is necessary to have innovative technologies in order to be competitive in the Arctic. The first non-nuclear icebreaker of Rosatomflot is the only one in its class. The vessel is equipped with the modern electromotive complex and the innovative electric power system”.
The exceptional technical characteristics of the diesel-electric icebreaker “Ob” were highly appreciated at the International contest of scientific, technical and innovative elaborations aimed at development and exploration of the Arctic. For the project “Innovative elaboration – the port icebreaker of the project “Aker ARC 124” No. 232 “Ob” the diploma of the winner of the third prize in the contest was given to the head of the group for technical supervision of shipbuilding under Portoflot project of “Atomflot” Alexander Degterev.
The port icebreaker “Ob” of the project “Aker ARC 124” (ice class Icebreaker7) has the capacity 12 Megawatt. It is able to operate efficiently in the ice 1.5 meters thick at the speed 2 knots and reach 4 knots in the broken ice up to 5 meters thick. In November the ship will start working in waters of the port of Sabetta, as the department of communications and protocol of “Atomflot” informs.
Portoflot project is a new line of business for Atomflot. The tugboats “Pur”, “Tambey”, “Nadym”, “Yuribey” and the port icebreaker “Ob” were built within the project. Work in arctic ports requires special skills and special vessels. “Atomflot” operates the modern fleet, which employs sailors, whose professional competence is confirmed with successful experience of work in the Arctic. Now the company provides a full range of port services in waters of the port of Sabetta. The port fleet together with nuclear-powered icebreakers works with tankers-gas carriers with the cargo capacity of more than 170 thousand cubic meters each.
In November of 2014 “Atomflot” signed the contract on providing of a range of services to the port fleet to ensure support of ships and servicing of water areas of the port of Sabetta for the project “Yamal LNG” till the 31st of December, 2040.
