Future of Khanty language will be discussed in Salekhard

On the 11th-12th of November Salekhard will host the interregional scientific and practical conference dedicated to problems of preservation and development of Khanty language.
The conference is timed to the international year of indigenous languages announced in 2019 by the United Nations Organization. Representatives of the scientific community and authorities, writers, journalists, teachers will discuss the wide range of theoretical and practical issues related to development of linguistic research, preservation of language environment, diversity of dialects and sub-dialects, use of Khanty language in modern literature, mass media and social networks. The conference will be organized by the department of external relations of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, the scientific center for study of the Arctic and the Russian center for exploration of the Arctic.
Khanty language belongs to the Ugric branch of Finno-Ugric languages. It is distributed in Shuryshkarskiy and Priuralskiy districts of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, in Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug, Kargasoksky and Alexandrovsky Districts of Tomsk Oblast. According to the census of 2010, Khanty language is spoken by 9600 people.
The sector of ethnology of the scientific center for study of the Arctic fulfills the research in the sphere of phraseology of Khanty language. Specialists conduct collection, systematization and description of phraseological units and reveal the main sources of replenishment of the phraseological fund. They also study works in Finno-Ugric languages and collect folkloristic materials.
