The amount of cargoes transported through the seaport of Sabetta in Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug two times increased in comparison with 2018 and made 19 million 500 thousand tonnes. The information was given to TASS by the head of Ural customs administration Maksim Chmora.
“155 vessels entered the port and transported more than 9 million tonnes of cargoes in 2018. Not much was imported, according to the customs service, 9300 tonnes — this is mainly equipment for the plant “Yamal LNG”, export (according to the customs service, 9 million tonnes) included products from the plant. In 2019 we see two times increase, both in the number of ships — more than 300, and in the amount of shipment, more than 19 million 500 thousand tonnes were transported”, Maksim Chmora said.
The head of the administration adds that the lack of railroad communication does not allow using the seaport as a transport one.
“But this year shows how much thinner the ice is (in a warm winter), and with regular use of the Northern Sea Route icebreaking support will be necessary only for very short areas. In fact, it will really create serious competition for traditional routes to deliver goods from South-East Asia to the European part and to the Russian Federation”, the head of the customs administration added.
