The medal ceremony in honor of the 75th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 took place on the 27th of January. The first 24 anniversary awards were given to veterans from Salekhard by the governor of Yamal Dmitry Artyukhov. They were received by veterans and participants of the Great Patriotic War, home front workers, residents of besieged Leningrad and former minor prisoners of fascism.
Welcoming the veterans, the head of the region underlined the significance of the important date. According to him 2020 — the year of memory and glory — is special.
“The 27th of January is the Day of complete lifting of the Siege of Leningrad. It is the honor for me to thank you, dear participants of the war, veterans and workers, for your heroic deed. The fact that we live on this land is your merit. You are the generation we shall always look up to and respect. There is not a single family in Russia that was not affected by the war. Our main task is to preserve the memory of that terrible war and the Great Victory”, Dmitry Artyukhov said.
The jubilee medal for the 75th anniversary of the Victory was given to a participant of the Great Patriotic War Nikolay Shakurov. He was called to the Soviet army at the age of 17, passed the course of a young soldier and got to the battle front. He fought on the third Belorussian front as an anti-tank gunner in the 618th rifle regiment. He participated in operation “Bagration” to liberate Belarus. After the war he came to the Far North.
In spite of his considerable age, Nikolay Timofeevich Shakurov is still full of strength, energy and optimism. He is always ready to tell the guests poems of the war years and is would not mind to walk around his favorite town. There are also poems today. In addition, the front-line soldier tries to attend significant events in the town as much as possible, traditionally opens the festive rally on the 9th of May and goes along the streets of the town within the Victory Parade.
Galina Vazhenina, a resident of besieged Leningrad, will never forget how her mother cut bread into pieces with the size of a matchbox for her and her little sister. In spite of the fact that Galina was 4 years old at the time, these fragments remained in her memory forever.
The President of Russia established the commemorative medal in the honor of the 75th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War last summer. The award ceremonies will be held in all towns and districts of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug. Also, veterans of the Great Patriotic War and all categories of citizens equated to them will receive one-time payment of 75 thousand rubles. Home front workers will receive 50 thousand rubles. This was stated by Vladimir Putin on the 18th of January.
As it should be noted, 1200 people went to the battle front from Yamal. All of them selflessly fought for peace and freedom of their homeland. One in four did not return from the war. For their bravery and courage eight residents of Yamal were awarded with the highest military award — the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. Three of them are residents of Salekhard Anatoly Zverev, Ivan Korolkov and Veniamin Yegorov. More than 3 thousand northerners were awarded with medals and orders.
