About sailing sport and more. Projects of the Russian Geographical Society were presented to Dmitry Artyukhov

On the 31^st of January in Salekhard the governor of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug Dmitry Artyukhov held the sitting of the board of guardians of the Yamal branch of the Russian Geographical Society, at which the results for the past year and the plans for 2020 were announced.

This is the first sitting of the board of guardians being held under the leadership of the governor of the region, who heads the board of guardians of the Yamal branch of the Russian Geographical Society. According to the governor, the Russian Geographical Society is one of the oldest organizations that played the key role in development of the Russian Arctic, Siberia and the Far East.  

“The Yamal branch of the Russian Geographical Society is still young, it is 10 years old. Nevertheless, it has already managed to carry out a number of important and necessary projects that are known not only in Yamal, but also beyond the Autonomous Okrug”, Dmitry Artyukhov said.  

According to Sergey Korlykhanov, the director for regional development of the Executive Directorate of the Russian Geographical Society, creating and functioning of the board of guardians throughout Russia is a strategic direction. It allows developing regional offices and performing full-scale projects on the territory of the country.  

“Yamal is the central part of the Arctic facade of Russia. Yamal is a severe northern region with amazing nature, which arouses great interest of scientists, researchers, travelers and local historians”, he said. Sergey Korlykhanov presented “The Encyclopedia of Travel” to the head of the region.  

Igor Znamensky, the chairman of the regional branch of the Russian Geographical Society, said that the team of very active and purposeful people united with one idea had been formed in the region. Expeditions are organized annually under the aegis of the Russian Geographical Society. Not only famous scientists, but also young people and students become participants. It allows cultivating love for the region, developing tourism and local history.

In 2020 the Russian Geographical Society in Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug will continue expedition activities and educational projects. Thus, the youth club will be opened under the branch of the Russian Geographical Society in Noviy Urengoy on the 7^th of February. In addition, the youth project “Sails of Yamal” will be launched. Its aim is to draw attention to development and promotion of sailing sport in the Autonomous Okrug.

Over the past year the Yamal branch of the Russian Geographical Society implemented 14 expeditions for the sum 14 million rubles. This year 29 projects were submitted to the board of guardians. Work of the youth club and the planned expedition on a catamaran from the Yenisei to Arkhangelsk were presented within the sitting. The board of guardians will have to decide, which projects are most interesting and will receive funds for their implementation.
