The event dedicated to reindeer-transport (reindeer-ski) battalions and reindeer of the years of the Great Patriotic War was held for the first time in Yamal on the anniversary of the Great Victory. They were popularly known as the Northern Cavalry. This is the name of the documentary film that was presented to guests of the event. It shows the contribution of indigenous peoples of the North to the fight against fascism.
During the event the issue was raised about formalizing of the date dedicated to the day of remembrance of participants in military transport battalions and reindeer of the years of the Great Patriotic War at the legislative level, alike in Nenets Autonomous Okrug. The information was given to a correspondent of the news agency “Sever-Press” by the executive director of the Union of reindeer herders of Yamal Timur Akchurin.
According to him, ethnic groups belonging to indigenous peoples of the North and historically living on the territory of Yamal also served in those military units. Also, thousands and thousands of tonnes of meat and fish were sent to the battle front from Yamal, since the victory was forged not only in the war, but also in the home front.
“We believe that it is necessary to work out the issue on installing of a monument to heroism of participants in military transport battalions of 1941-1945 and reindeer of the years of the Great Patriotic War”, Timur Akchurin said. – “Moreover, on the 3rd of February the State Duma of the Russian Federation introduced the draft law on initiative or “people’s” budgeting. It will allow citizens to decide for themselves for what first to spend funds from the local budget”.
The head of the public organization reminds that more often someone abroad is increasingly trying to distort, rewrite the history of the Second World War. In his opinion, holding of such events, adoption of laws aimed at perpetuation of the memory of participants in the Great Patriotic War, installation of monuments to heroes of those years preserve the historical memory of generations.
